What moves Parc Ela? As part of the monthly lecture series "Parc Ela an muvimaint", this time we are focusing on the latest research results of cultural researcher Antonia Bertschinger on the witch hunts in Surses, developed as part of a research project of the Institute for Cultural Research Graubünden (ikg).
In the early modern period, witch hunts also took place in Surses – as in many parts of Europe. Women (and also some men) were accused of harmful sorcery, put on trial, tortured and executed. What today seems like an almost unimaginable story of injustice was at the time a widely accepted way of acting in a society that was characterized by conflicts, mistrust and belief in the devil.

In her lecture, Antonia Bertschinger takes us on a historical search for traces in Surses.

• What do we know about the witch trials in Surses and what not?
• How do we deal with this dark chapter of our history today?

Using archival sources, she draws a differentiated picture of this period and encourages us to deal with questions of guilt, justice and memory. The lecture invites you to see local history with new eyes – and at the same time opens up a critical look at mechanisms of exclusion and violence that are just as effective today as they were then.
