Segantini 12: Hotel Piz Mitgel

The "Kurhaus Piz Michel" was built in 1870 by the Wasescha brothers. In addition to the pass traffic, they rely on spa tourism. In the summer of 1874, the hotel advertised itself in a newspaper advertisement with the headline "Climatic health resort Schweiningen" as an ideal place for a longer stay for families and air spa enthusiasts as well as for tourists. The number of tourists transported over the Julier increased steadily. In 1888 there were 14,471; In 1900, there were already 22,706.

With the opening of the Albulalaline of the Rhaetian Railway in 1903, the travel time from Chur to the Upper Engadine was reduced from 12 to 4 hours. Traffic through Oberhalbstein collapsed, and in 1908 only 1527 postal passengers were transported.

After various changes of ownership, the hotel first became the property of the Waldegg family in 1961, and since April 2021 it has been the property of the "Piz Mitgel Val Surses Foundation". The aim of this is to preserve the socially and historically valuable Hotel Piz Mitgel, which is characteristic of the local landscape, in order to preserve it for future generations and lead it into the future. It was reopened for the 2021/22 winter season after a gentle renovation.
