The village of Riom is located on the eastern slope of Piz Toissa, high above the valley floor with the Gelgia. It stands out from the surrounding villages due to its striking castle. The villagescape of Riom has been awarded the title of "Townscape of National Importance".

Segantini 19: Le cattive madri – Die bösen Mütter, 1894
The picture refers to the poem «Nirvana» by Luigi Illica. Segantini painted it at the Lai Tigiel above Alp Tussagn on the opposite side of the valley. He may also have been inspired by the figures in the ceiling painting in the church of Son Martegn.

Baba Uffer grew up in this quarter in the house at Veia Son Mitgel 15. She joined the Segantini family as a domestic help at the age of 13 and became the painter's preferred model. Baba embodies the young farmer's wife in many of Segantini's works.
